Jamshedpur - One of the Greenest cities in India

Just thought would share an Article that appeared on Rediff on the greenest cities in India and which included my lovely City, Jamshedpur.
(Note: The rediff.com Link can be accessed by clicking on the title of the blog.)

Jamshedpur was founded by late Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata.

Jamshedpur

The city founded by late Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata, is a planned industrial city. It is also known as Steel City and TataNagar.

It is located on the Chota Nagpur plateau and is surrounded by the picturesque Dalma Hills. Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers border the city on the north and west parts of the city.

Jamshedpur was declared the seventh cleanest city of India for the year 2010 according to survey by the Government of India.

It has been selected as one of the cities for the Global Compact Cities Pilot Programme by United Nations, the only one to be selected in India as well as the entire South-East Asia.

The major attraction of Steel city are Dimna Lake, Jubilee Park, Zoological Park and Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a dense forests in Jamshedpur and rich in flora and fauna.

The responsibility of conservation and maintenance are taken care of by Tata Steel.

Leaf Insect?

Probably the strangest thing that i have every photographed. I found it in my XLRI hostel room some years back. Observed it very closely before it left my room. At first thought it was a leaf but when i went closer i was quite amazed to see it is an insect.

Oh...by the way, Those (leaves) are Wings!

Can you spot the eyes and the antenna?!

P.S - Did not find anything resembling the same on the net. Would appreciate it if someone has any clue on what they are called?

Great Social & Environmental Advertisements

Got these pictures in my inbox as a forward. Really nice advertisements on social and environmental issues.

The advertisements on the environment served as a reminder on how fragile our world has become and the tipping point that we have reached. We have to act now...or it will be really too late. Similarly, the adverts on social issues, at least for me, reminded me of an obligation to act in a better way towards the repressed and the under privileged. This is particularly so considering that India is becoming richer and we today have the means to make the lives of others much better.

Aman ki Aasha - An initiative of The Times of India Group & The Jang Group of Pakistan (Part I)

I chanced upon this brilliant video (Song sung by Shankar Mahadevan)about an Initiative called 'Aman ki Asha' which talks about brotherhood between Indians and Pakistanis. It shows us how much similarity exists between us and how we should never let that go away. True, there are massive problems between us but some start needs to be taken and nurtured. And this seems to be a good one at that...

Everyone who wishes to see peace and happiness in India and Pakistan - and in the larger context, the world - should support this initiative. It is a great start by the biggest media house in each country and would definitely help in furthering the cause of bringing stability to this region. More details and news reports are available on the TOI website 'Aman Ki Asha' and the Geo TV website 'Aman Ki Asha'. There is also a Facebook page to keep tabs on all events.

Miles to go before i Sleep...

This road between Bhubaneshwar and Puri was one of the most beautiful roads i have seen. An everlasting avenue which actually reminds you of the great poem "Miles to go before i sleep...."

Natural Pearls

Posted by Picasa

The pictures of these pearls were taken on an island on Chilka Lake in the Orissa state of India. There was a quaint temple on the island and some people were selling these pearls next to it. Infact, you could choose the oysters and they would break it open in front of you to show you the pearl. It was your lucky day, if you got a perfect one!!

The great Chilka Lake - Trust me...Its huge!!

That's an Irrawaddy Dolphin - Chilka Lake

A very rare sight indeed, by some accounts only 50 of them are still left in India's Chilka lake.
